Alfred Bedell, Professor Emeritus at SUNY Ulster is a sponsor of 3 Scholarships; American Service-Family Scholarship, Bedell Family Scholarship and Jerome and Sadie Hirsch Nursing Scholarship. The American Service-Family Scholarship was established by Lieutenant-Commander Alfred C. Bedell USN (retired) in honor of the ongoing sacrifices and hardships endured by service-families, and in memory of the 22 aircrew members of AEWRON-15 Willy Victor-2 # 141310 who forever remain somewhere between checkpoints Mahogany and Pendulum. The Bedell Family Scholarship was established by Alfred and his brother, Harold, a retired Dutchess County Sheriff’s Department Lieutenant, in memory of Alfred J. and Frances S. Bedell, who valued education, personal integrity, and civic responsibility. Alfred established the Jerome and Sadie Hirsch Trust scholarship to memorialize his dear friends. Jerome Hirsch served in the Civilian Conservation Corps during the depression and served in the United States Navy as a chief electronics technician in World War II in the Pacific Theater and in Korea. He received a BS from Marist College, teaching electronics at IBM in Kingston until his retirement in 1973. Mr. Hirsch died in 2009 at the age of 94 with his wife Sadie predeasing him in 1997.
