Dr. Richard Katims Scholarship
Dr. Katims was a valued member of the college community, a friend to everyone at SUNY Ulster, and an inspirational teacher and mentor to his students. Dr. Katims determined that all proceeds from the sale of his book, Soundings: Poems and Essays, will be contributed to the College Foundation, in perpetuity, in order to create an endowed scholarship in his name. The Foundation will maintain a plaque upon which upon which a panel may be added each year with the name of the new recipient. The recipient will be presented with a certificate at the Scholarship Ceremony. Recipients for this award should be transferring to a four-year institution or other college and a letter of acceptance is required. Dr. Katims expressed that the recipient shall be “committed to studying about and working for human rights, world peace, protection of the environment, or the diminution and elimination of global hunger and poverty.” Preference will be given to students who are the first members of their families to graduate from college. Second preference will be given to those students with the highest grade point average.
