Kathryn Josephine Brown Memorial Scholarship
Kathryn J. Brown was a remarkable woman. Born in the Bronx, and raised in Mineola, NY during WWII, she endured the deprivations and personal loss of many of her generation. She graduated from high school early to work full-time and help support her beloved mother, but she yearned to attend college. Financial constraints and the restrictions placed upon many girls of her time prevented this dream, but she instilled in her children a love and desire for continued learning. She had an insatiable curiosity for people, places, and knowledge. She was a passionate and graceful ice skater, an expert marksperson, gave sage advice, had a great spirit and a sense of humor, and retired at the age of 81, four years before her passing. At the age of 40, she found herself a single mother of five children, and it was then that her resourcefulness, intelligence, and strong spirit were fully demonstrated. She made sure that each of her children found a profession in life, and encouraged their friends to do the same. In 2014, her daughter, Dr. Lynn May Brown, a SUNY Ulster Alumna, established a scholarship to honor her mother for her immeasurable impact on the lives of many. This scholarship will be given to a full-time or part-time returning or graduating and transferring student. A cumulative grade point average of (3.2) or higher and recommendation by a SUNY Ulster faculty member are required. Preference will be given to a science/math student who is a single parent, and/or first in their family to attend college, and/or planning a career in geriatric or cardiovascular health. Est. 2014
