Dorothy E. Patton Memorial Nursing Scholarship

Dorothy Edwards Patton died on November 2, 2010, at the Mt. View Nursing Home in New Paltz, New York. She lived most of her life in Nashville, Tennessee, receiving a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and a master’s degree in special education from Peabody Teachers’ College. She taught classes at the elementary and secondary levels and was a dedicated teacher and an educational innovator. Perhaps her greatest achievement was developing some of the first learning disabilities programs in Tennessee. Later in her career, she shared her educational expertise with college students at the graduate level. She possessed the ability, passion, and compassion to make a difference in the lives of hundreds if not thousands of students, colleagues and friends.

The scholarship will be awarded to an entering or returning student who is pursuing a course of study in Nursing and has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher. Preference will be given to a student who has worked at the Mountain View Nursing Home in New Paltz, is a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), a Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA), or is a single parent.
